FAQ

What can I expect in the first session?
In our first session, we'll take time to get to know each other and I'll introduce you to the therapy process. I'll review important information like consent and confidentiality and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. We'll also begin exploring your story, your strengths, what has brought you to therapy, as well as how we can work together to reach your goals.
Therapy can sometimes stir up emotions that may feel uncomfortable and that is completely normal. I encourage you to think about how you can be gentle with yourself before, during and after our sessions. This may be as simple as adding small, comforting actions like wearing cozy clothes, practicing mindful breathing, enjoying a hot cup of tea or giving yourself extra time and space after a session. The key is to be gentle with yourself and allow room for self-compassion, especially during emotionally challenging moments.

What is the session fee and how do I pay?
Individual and family therapy sessions are $220 per 50-minute session. This follows current fee schedule recommendations from the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. Payment is due following the received service. Payment is made via the Jane app using a major credit card.
Align Psychology does not direct bill to insurance companies at this time. Receipts will be issued following each session.
Please Note: Effective January 15, 2025, fees will increase to $235 per 50-minute session in alignment with the 2025 PAA recommendations.

Tell me about confidentiality.
Privacy and confidentiality of client information is of utmost importance. Confidentiality and its exceptions will be discussed in the first session and throughout therapy.
No client information is disclosed without written consent from the client. The exceptions to confidentiality include:
When files are subpoened by a court of law.
If psychologist suspects child abuse/neglect or abuse/neglect of a dependent person.
If a client communicates a threat of bodily harm to self or others.
If a client is at imminent danger to self.
When engaging in family therapy or therapy with a minor, the psychologist will address issues of confidentiality, disclosure and release of information at the beginning of the professional relationship and throughout care, as needed.

What is your cancellation policy?
At this time we require a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancelled or rescheduled sessions. This allows for others to access that session time. If you cancel an appointment within 24 hours of the scheduled session, or if you do not attend the scheduled session, you will be responsible for paying the full session fee.

Tell me more about virtual therapy.
Virtual therapy is shown to be as effective as in-person therapy. Whether it’s due to comfort level, weather, illness, child care, time constraints, commute/parking hesitations or living in a remote area, virtual therapy may be your answer.
Align Psychology uses Jane App as a secure telehealth platform for virtual therapy. The Jane app is HIPAA compliant and each online appointment is encrypted, anonymous, and never recorded or stored. Following the booking of your first appointment, you will receive an intake package by secure email that includes information on how to log into the Jane App.
To keep your information private, it is recommended that you do online therapy sessions in a private space and use headphones. Clients are not to participate in a video or telephone session while operating a vehicle. Due to professional regulations, all clients accessing virtual therapy must be in Alberta or Ontario during the session time.
